Eagerly checking the mailbox this afternoon, we were excited to see the newest issue of 'PlayStation: The Official Magazine,' until we saw the cover and nearly wet ourselves. The cover story was 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.' We then sank into a deep, deep depression. Now, before you go hanging us an heretics, we're not bashing on Modern Warfare 3 rather, we're bashing on Future, its editors and Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony. Today, Sony's going to hear it from us.
Now, we know the sales that Sony sees coming from Call of Duty and we can now set that aside. Future may be the publishers of PlayStation's Official Magazine but, Sony should have played the game a little differently. Though Sony will see a hefty sum of money from Modern Warefare 3 on its console, is that really the success that Sony wants to see? Is Uncharted 3 not Sony's game as well? Here we are a month away from launch of the next installment in the Uncharted franchise and Sony are pressing even more advertisement for Modern Warfare 3. Its the POSM cover story. Does Modern Warfare 3 really need any other publicity or advertising? I wouldn't think so. Microsoft will already have that covered as well as Activision advertising and already extremely popular game that gamers buy a new Special Edition console just for the game. COME ON SONY! ACTIVISION DOESN'T NEED ANY MORE ATTENTION!
What Sony needed to do was focus its attention and efforts on Uncharted 3. The world already knows what Call of Duty is. They don't know what Uncharted is. Uncharted 3 may have its fanbase but, does Sony not want to expand that fanbase? Sony's needs to drive the advertising like Microsoft did for Gears of War. Gears of War was Microsoft's game for the year and they'd shown it. Sony, seems to be far too relaxed about it's big seller this year. Granted, the POSM had a centerfold of Nathan Drake and an ad for the Uncharted game bundle and 8.5" x 11," Uncharted should have been the cover story. Its not us that's losing money, we're simply the ones reading the articles and learning of others experiences but, we feel Sony really screwed the pooch on this one. Sony ought to have their gamers thinking of nothing else throughout the month of October than Uncharted. The release of the competitive multiplayer is great! If gamers get off their fat can's to go to a Subway and they'll see what the multiplayer is all about but, what kind of numbers does Sony want to see for its baby this year? Does it want to compete with Microsoft's Goliath Gears of War that just sold 3 million copies in its first week?
The one thing about Bill Gates was this. Nobody would ever really call him innovative but, he could make people believe that he really was the innovator of that technology and people would believe it. Microsoft's Xbox 360 division is built with that mindset because well, its Bill Gates' company. What gave Bill Gates that edge was that he could market. He could advertise. Now remember, business is business. Its not dishonest if its business. If Bill Gates wants to claim it as his own, it just took the right marketing. Kinect had been done before with the Eye Toy but, Microsoft knows how to market that Kinect and baby, they've got the Xbox world believing its their innovation because the gaming world doesn't know any better. If Sony wants to succeed with Uncharted moreso than they did with Uncharted 2, they're going to need to tear a page from Bill Gates' book and market that bad boy. Gamers aren't going to suddenly adopt Uncharted 3, those that purchase Uncharted 3 will be big fans of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune while those who played Uncharted 2 will be excited and will pick it up then but, I doubt many will suddenly get a PS3 just for Uncharted 3.
