Its been a rather difficult past few weeks for Sony as they've been working to get security up and running on the PlayStation Network and get things back to normal. It seems another potentially minor setback has presented itself and Sony have shut down PSN sign-in access on its PlayStation-related websites for "maintenance purposes."
It would seem that gaming website had discovered a method of how to change PSN Passwords using a PSN account holders email address and birth date. Bare in mind that this had come from a gaming site and not a threat that had surfaced from a hacker though, you know that hackers are looking into and researching the matter.
Sony have no officially stated anything just yet but sites have quoted Sony saying:
"Clarification: this maintenance doesn't affect PSN on consoles... Only the website you click through to from the password change email....We'll let you know as soon as the landing page is back online."Its said that this was a "critical oversight," according to Joystiq.com, that Sony had not changed this method of password reset.
If you have received an email from Sony stating that your password has been reset, and you have not changed reset the password yourself, you should contact Sony immediately.
The source of this information has suggested that you create a new email account specifically for the PlayStation Network that you wouldn't normally use with anything else with its own unique password and transfer your account to that email address. (We didn't know you could do that), though we haven't heard anything official yet to confirm that's necessary.
The battle goes on and the process still going in securing PlayStation Network and returning things to "normal." We'll keep you posted as detail's become available right here on the XZONE.
