Last year, Sony had aquired RakNet from Kevin Jenkins of 'Jenkins Software.' RakNet is a C++ developed engine that is believed to bring incredible stability to the online experience. It is actually believed that RakNet is so well built that its online capabilities are actually powerful enough to rival Xbox LIVE! This means that RakNets evolution with PlayStation Network is capable of surpassing Xbox LIVE! which gamers are paying what was once $50/yr and has since gone up to $60/yr since Kinect and ESPN's integration into Xbox LIVE! last year, Sony's customers are receiving for free. It seems to be a very gradual process however but RakNet's potential seems to be pretty remarkable. The question is, does RakNet pose a threat to Xbox LIVE! at all?
The answer is most definitely. Its clear that Sony is focusing heavily on its online services with the inclusion of Steam Support from the Seattle based development company Vavle. Its obvious as well that Sony are taking notes and learning from Valve. We're now seeing a list of services that were drawn out and rumored before E3 last year. Several of those have already been met with Cloud Saves being one of them. RakNet is also believed to be able to provide an inexpensive, comprehensive and effective use of online functionality including, are you ready for this? .... XGC (Cross-Game Chat.) Something I'm guessing we could possibly hear from at this year's E3. RakNet can make that possible. All this buzz that we're hearing about PlayStation Home and it taking it to the next level as we've heard teased by PlayStation The Official Magazine's Editor in Chief.
So, Microsoft has Xbox LIVE! for the Xbox 360 that's touted as the superior online service, right? Well, Microsoft has just followed in Sony's footsteps and not to long ago acquired the rights to Kevin Jenkins RakNet software as well. Microsoft see's value in the RakNet software which means there's a base Microsoft hasn't exactly covered yet. We could be seeing some interesting things coming from both sides this year and I suspect the result of RakNet integration and its services could surface this year at E3 and PlayStation 3 gamers could finally be seeing Cross-Game Chat on PlayStation Network with RakNet taking and simplifying what's been and expensive and difficult process for Microsoft, thought I wouldn't expect Microsoft to suddenly offer Xbox LIVE! for free. Microsoft feels the online fee is necessary and allows for better online serviecs. That may not stand if E3 rolls around, and RakNet struts itself and PlayStation Network blows our minds. We'll see what the future holds and find out what's finally going on with PlayStation Home.
