Perhaps I've taken this way out of context, but I kind of doubt it. According to Joystiq.com if I understand this correctly, Microsoft is looking for testers to test out a 'New Disc Format.' What exactly could this disc format be? In the post before this one, we were talking about the 'Format Wars' as well as 3D.
Apparently, Xbox's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb had posted on his site that Microsoft and Xbox 360 are looking for testers to test out their new disc format. Testers will be using their current Xbox 360's and they will be rewarded, for their efforts, with a copy of Halo: Reach. Now, Microsoft has been hiring for new console development design, but I doubt they've started development on it yet so gamers will be using their current Xbox 360's. What exactly does this mean? Joystiq predicts the Halo: Reach testers will be given will use this new disc format. Has Microsoft finally given in to temptation to give up on multi-disc games and use a rumored format that uses DVD's but crams the data tighter together? Could the HD DVD return to combat the Blu-ray Disc allowing more storage capacity on physical media? Are we really looking at disc-free consoles next generation in favor of digital download? Doesn't sound like it to me if this is true.
Both Xbox LIVE! Gold and Silver members are eligible to participate. This seems pretty suspicious and games are getting shorter with less storage space. The good news, is that if this is true, there won't be as many limitations to the PS3 version of multi-platform games because storage space won't be an issue. To me, it has always seemed as though third-party titles were always developed around the Xbox 360, duh, because its easier to develop for, right? But also storage limitations. We've learned from released like Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII, that gamers just don't like to swap discs and PS3 gamers always have something to brag about, but what happens when you take that away from them? Then what? Only time will tell. But then again, maybe I'm just over analyzing. Head over to here to sign up if you so choose too:
