We knew that there would a Limited Edition and Epic Edition Gears of War 3 but, we really weren't certain what would come along with them. Both Gears of War and Gears of War 2 Limited Editions came in a steel case with a Collectors Art Book, a Special Edition Bonus DVD and DLC which was pretty good. Well, now that the Gears of War 3 Special Editions have been announced, they're leaving a pretty bad taste in our mouths sending us back to picking up the game in its standard Edition. Here are each Special Edition and their contents:
Gears of War 3 Limited Edition
- An Octus award box and Octus service medal – Replicas of the honors bestowed on Adam Fenix, Marcus's father, for his work on the Hammer of Dawn.
- Exclusive unlockable Adam Fenix multiplayer character
- A fabric COG Flag
- The personal effects of Adam Fenix, including his "Last Will and Testament," the initial Hammer of Dawn schematic, and other Fenix family mementos.
Gears of War 3 Epic Edition
- A Limited Edition Marcus Fenix Statue – Designed by Epic Games Art Director Chris Perna and expertly crafted by the artisans at Triforce, this fine PVC statue collectible makes the ultimate living room centerpiece for any true "Gears" fan.
- The Art and Design of 'Gears of War' by Tom Bissell - Through unprecedented access to the Epic Games team, acclaimed author Tom Bissell (Extra Lives) gives readers an incisive behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the most celebrated sagas in video game history with 96 pages of interviews, photos, concept artwork and more.
- Infected Omen Weapon Pack -- Custom multiplayer skins for the game's five starting weapons; Lancer, Retro Lancer, Hammerburst, Sawed-off Shotgun, and Gnasher Shotgun.
- All the Content of the Limited Edition Version
Now for us, the Limited Edition seems pretty lame. Its a box with a medal cog, a flag and some paper. It just doesn't get us excited for the Limited Edition. I seem to have found the Gears of War 2 Limited Edition much more interesting.
As for the Gears of War 3 Epic Edition, don't get me wrong. I think its awesome! Its everything the Limited Edition comes with but, with an awesome statue of Marcus Fenix and the Collectors Art book. The problem with the Epic Edition is that it doesn't exactly justify the cost of the thing. The Epic Edition Retail's at $149.99 which means that you're paying more than the cost of a new game for a Marcus Fenix Statue and an Art book. That's also HALF the cost of a NEW game console. When you pit that up against Sony's announced Hero Edition for InFamous 2, we have no problem plopping down the cash for its Special Edition.
InFamous 2 Hero Edition (PS3)
- Sling Pack
-8.5 Inch Cole Statue
- DC Mini Comic
- InFamous 2 Soundtrack
- Voucher for In-Game DLC
The InFamous 2 Hero Edition is going for $50 less seeming more feasible and a little more attractive. We still have yet to see what the Uncharted 3 Treasure Hunter Edition would be should it still have it but, we know business is business for Microsoft. A $50 camera retails for $150 and Microsoft always makes a fat profit. We'll still end up with the Epic Edition but, it certainly isn't worth the cash when compared to the competition.
