According to VGChartz.com, weekly sales for the week have crowned the PlayStation 3 King sitting at worldwide 204,350 units. The Nintendo DS was the winning handheld sitting at 215,124 units.
PlayStation 3 204,350
Xbox 360 183,532
Wii 181,554
DS 215,124
PSP 167,877
Of course these are Worldwide Sales. Naturally, the PlayStation 3 still struggles to sell in the US, though its gaining ground, as well as the Xbox 360 struggling to sell in Japan. Europe and pretty much everyone else seem to be the neutral ground, for the most part, but the PlayStation 3 still manages to outsell the Xbox 360 in other areas as well as the Wii. The Xbox 360's dominance, much like the Sega Genesis compared to the Super Nintendo, lies within its boarders of origin while outside in worldwide territory is not quite the same. What surprises me most is the decline of Wii sales. What will blow your mind even more, is that the DS sales for the week, just about lost out to the Nintendo 3DS this week in Japan only! The 3DS sold 209,438 units. That's in Japan alone.
This week, a speculation surfaced that consumers could be expecting a price drop from Sony for the PlayStation 3 and that Microsoft will either do so as well, or they will wait it out to see what Sony does and then follow right along. It would make sense for Microsoft to follow suit and they still have breathing room to make a profit on their console with price cuts. However for Sony, I really don't know. Perhaps they'll find a way to up the ante on bundles but, this one sort of confuses me, unless Sony has found a way to cut costs. Otherwise, Sony's looking at going back to losing money. Can Sony Computer Entertainment really afford that?
Finally, its also rumored that Microsoft has been looking for employee's to begin work on the Xbox 720. Though nothing is confirmed, what everyone does know, or should know, is that Microsoft has already begun hiring on some sort of tech designer. But, is this really a smart move by Microsoft? Could they be on the verge of releasing new hardware already? The economy is still in pieces and history has shown that consoles over $300 aren't a hot commodity. I personally felt the PlayStation 3 was worth its weight in gold, but far too many didn't see things that way. I guess we'll see what Microsoft has up their sleeve and how things go over the next year. Regardless, congratulations Sony on your second capture of the overall sales for two weeks in a row as well as the Nintendo DS and I'll say 3DS for the excellent sales.
